Amy’s Story

Amy’s Story

Amy started attending a Q Place in September after being invited by a neighbor. The group was studying the book of Mark. Amy was seeking truth and faithfully went through each week’s study so that she would be prepared to discuss the ideas that had been covered. But one afternoon, she knocked on my door and asked for fifteen minutes of my time to talk before she had to pick up her kids from school. I was surprised! Although we were in the Q Place group together, Amy had never come over before. But she certainly seemed as if she had something very important on her mind....Read more …
Right in your backyard?

Right in your backyard?

Moving to a new U.S. city, people rarely experience a hearty welcome from their new neighbors. Our new international neighbors may experience even less welcome, but it is in their first months of adjustment that those practicing the 9 Arts of Spiritual Conversations can introduce them to a loving God.  In the ancient text of Leviticus 19:33, God urges us to welcome the foreigner. In my city of Bellevue, Washington, I have clearly seen the opportunity to do so!  The Pacific Northwest region is experiencing a new wave of immigration—predominantly Chinese—and I have the privilege of serving these families by welcoming...Read more …

The Baby Shower

The Baby Shower

Although from all appearances, it appeared to be an “ordinary, normal, suburban-church-style” baby shower, this baby shower was anything but. This baby shower was the result of a discussion with the local women’s shelter director who had called me one day, knowing I was always on the lookout for ways that our ladies’ group could serve the community. She had told me there were two ladies at the shelter who were both pregnant, and even though they both had older children, neither had ever had a baby shower. Ever. So I broached the subject at our group’s next meeting and...Read more …

God Does the Heavy Lifting

God Does the Heavy Lifting

How inspiring it was for On Q to discover why Tom has started a Q Place! On Q: Tom, can you tell us a little about your faith story? Tom: I grew up Catholic, but at 17 stopped going to church. I still believed in God, but didn’t believe there were any churches that allowed questions, and there were obviously questions to answer. When I was 30 I married someone from a mainline Protestant denomination who eventually got me going to church with her—but it was just what I call Catholic Lite: people mumbling the same responses week after week because it’s what their...Read more …
Make Your Own Pizza…Start a Q Place!

Make Your Own Pizza…Start a Q Place!

Daniel Chae, a college student at Baylor University in Texas, decided he wanted to have spiritual conversations with his fellow students, so he stepped out and launched a Q Place! At the end of April, photos were texted across the country, along with Daniel’s ecstatic announcement: “The very first Baylor Q Place!” The setting was perfect for college students: a make-your-own pizza night. Daniel reported that the non-Christians outnumbered the Christians. “We even had a Muslim come join us!” Everyone responded well to the idea of talking about God; they all answered the question, “If you could ask God one thing...Read more …

On the Radio – Q Place and Mary!

Earlier this week, Q Place president Mary Schaller had a great conversation with Debbie Chavez on the Debbie Chavez Show. After working as a news anchor, talk show host and manager at a news-talk radio station for 27 years, Debbie began hosting her faith-based radio talk show in 2008. On Tuesday, Mary had a chance to hear some of Debbie’s encouraging words to women for a few moments before Debbie and Mary got down to talking about engaging in spiritual conversations with those who believe differently. Enjoy listening!  Read more …
Allies in Life

Allies in Life

“Only about 20% of people regularly spend time with those living next to them, and one third report never interacting with their neighbors, according to a 2015 report from economist Joe Cortwright” (quoted in the May 2016 Reader’s Digest). I find it interesting that Acts 17:26 states, “God began by making one man. From him came all the different people who live everywhere in the world. He decided exactly when and where they must live” (Emphasis mine, NCV). Why did God put me in this state, in this city, in this neighborhood, in this house—at this time? Could he have...Read more …
5 Ways We Are Doing Evangelism Wrong

5 Ways We Are Doing Evangelism Wrong

Editor’s Note: If you have the desire to engage in spiritual conversations with those who believe differently, you will undoubtedly find the following thoughts helpful, recently written by Q Place president, Mary Schaller, for crosswalk.com. Somehow, our ways of spreading the good news about Jesus have turned into bad news for so many. Before we can facilitate any spiritual conversation, our lives have to welcome. We have to love. ____________________________ Insensitive. Judgmental. Hypocritical. Narrow minded. Preachy.  This was the rapid-fire response I got from a small group discussion I was facilitating when the topic of evangelism came up. It was a...Read more …
