Critical Keys that Allow us to Be Good News People to those God is Already After

Critical Keys that Allow us to Be Good News People to those God is Already After

Where do you think God was before you came on the scene? Do your current maps fit the territory of today? What are the existential issues of today? Are you listening? Alan Hirsch, a thought leader in the missional church movement, recently addressed these questions at AMPLIFY and asserts that our answers to them directly effect how effective we will be in sharing the Gospel, encouraging believers to take heart–that just because people have rejected the church, does not mean they have rejected Jesus or the Gospel. What is good news for this people group? In the video that follows Hirsch answers this question,...Read more …
Why Together?

Why Together?

In several memorable scenes throughout the Gospels, Jesus asked people to participate with him in the work he was doing, even though they did not yet understand who he was. He asked wedding servants to fill thirty-gallon pots with water when the wine had run out. He asked a Samaritan woman, in the heat of the day, to give him a drink from a well. He told a lame man to carry his mat, a blind man to go wash clay from his eyes, and mourners to remove a stone from a cave and unwrap the dead man who came out...Read more …

On the Radio – Walk the Way

This is Walk the Way. Brought to you by Q Place. I’m Jeff Klein. And I’m Pam Klein. Yonas is a friend from our church. Originally a refugee from Ethiopia, when Yonas first arrived, his neighbor, Johannes, welcomed him and walked alongside him. Yonas talks about how important Johannes was in his life, giving Johannes credit for leading him to Christ. Just recently, Johannes died, leaving his wife Zemzem behind. Yonas wanted to help this man who’d helped him in so many ways and offered to help Zemzem with some outside house maintenance.  Our church family had the privilege of...Read more …
6 Ways Serving Can Be More than a Good Personal Experience

6 Ways Serving Can Be More than a Good Personal Experience

Dr. Brian Howell, an anthropology professor at Wheaton College and author of the book Short-term Mission: An Ethnography of Christian Travel Narrative and Experience, says that the single greatest benefit of the service experience (a.k.a. short term mission) is reaped by those who are serving, not by the person or organization being served. In an interview with Christianity Today, Howell said this: “There’s poverty out there, and we should do something about it because we’re Christians. We’ve traditionally thought of missions as evangelism, but now we’re thinking about missions more as serving, caring, and giving. We’re going to do something. But...Read more …

On the Radio Today – Walk the Way

This is Walk the Way. Brought to you by Q Place. I’m Jeff Klein. And I’m Ben Klein. Most of the real lessons I learned in life came through my own self-discovery. This is proving to be true for my oldest son, Benjamin, as well. (Ben) Yeah, I’ve always pushed the limits, and when my dad warned me that twenty-one year old bones can’t take the pounding like my teenage bones used to, I didn’t listen. I’m stubborn and still too crazy. But then – in a late-night summer chase game with my younger brother and all his cronies, I leapt...Read more …
Is the Bible necessary?

Is the Bible necessary?

Practices such as noticing, praying, listening, asking questions, loving and welcoming equip you to begin having meaningful conversations about God with others who believe differently. However, as Q Place President Mary Schaller writes in The 9 Arts of Spiritual Conversations, “without intentionality to create an ongoing opportunity, your conversations may be hit or miss…When safe, meaningful conversations get started, the most natural next step is to keep them going by gathering a group of spiritually curious people who are interested in learning more about God and what they believe.” (p.223) In his book, Seeker Small Groups, Gary Poole, answers a resounding YES to the question:...Read more …

On the Radio this Week – Walk the Way

This is Walk the Way, brought to you by Q Place, I’m Jeff Klein. And I’m Pam Klein. Chicago was so crowded the night we went in for my birthday dinner! We’d forgotten it was the same day as the Gay Pride parade. But one look at all the colorful clothing that surrounded us and it clicked. Fortunately, we secured an Uber to get us around downtown.  Tangela was our driver–and was she ever decked out! Blue lipstick. A great hat with a huge heart on it, rainbow fingernails. Festive to the “nth” degree! And before we knew it, it...Read more …
Love for the Long Haul

Love for the Long Haul

Today, just a few more things as my thoughts from Monday’s blog continue to tumble around in my brain. Yes, it is true. As I wrote on Monday: Our Heavenly Father doesn’t allow us to remain satisfied with our own good fortune—He keeps rocking our world so that we will awaken to those around us who need freedom and healing, too. Our call absolutely is to welcome others into freedom and healing as our Father has welcomed us. But, WOW. It can be hard sometimes. Oh, not the initial welcoming. Honestly, that’s the easy part. I’m talking about the long haul. Sustainable...Read more …
I was just doing my job.

I was just doing my job.

I’m a professional free-lance voice talent. That’s code for a person who gets hired to read scripts (or “copy” as it’s called in “the business”) for everything from corporate training videos to movie trailers or TV or radio commercials. We’re the people you don’t see, but you do hear. Sure, it’s an industry being taken over by the “famous voices” but I’m grateful there’s still plenty of room for “working talent” like me. You could say I read out loud for a living! Just recently, I was hired to read a book so that it could also be offered to the public in an audio format....Read more …

On the Radio this week – Walk the Way

This is Walk the Way, brought to you by Q Place, I’m Jeff Klein. And I’m Pam Klein. My friend and I had just left a garage sale in a very expensive neighborhood and set our GPS to the address of the next one (this is regular summer Friday stuff for us) when we saw a very long fence between two of these exclusive properties painted green, pink, purple, orange and yellow. Yup. One section one solid color, then another, another color, but then individual slats–one after the other–each painted a different color. It was crazy! And in this neighborhood?...Read more …
